MIAMI -- Jim McLean is a noted golf instructor, not a famous golf course architect. But McLean, who runs his famed golf school at the Doral Golf Resort & Spa, a Marriott Resort, showcased some savvy design skills during the 2009 remodeling of the resort's Silver Course into the newly named Jim McLean Signature Course. (He also worked on the TPC Blue Monster in 1993 with Raymond Floyd).
The old Silver Course was scraped clean, giving McLean a clean palette to paint. He couldn't redesign the existing layout, so he softened contours and added subtle touches like the new back tee next on the island green at No. 14. Water dictates good course management.
The signature stretch, the "Bermuda Triangle," starts at No. 13, a 477-yard par 4. After the 186-yard 14th to the island green, the stretch climaxes at the 430-yard 15th, an epic challenge with water up the entire right side.
