El Diablo's charm is its isolated location in central Florida, southwest of Ocala. This is Florida's horse ranch country, with beautiful oak-dotted hills that contain some of the state's best courses. Designated by Golf Digest as "Best New Affordable Golf Course" in 1999, it continued its great tradition during the following years.
Architecturally, El Diablo quite good. Holes rise and fall along narrow corridors of dense pine and live oaks. Bold white bunkers define and guard every twist and turn. Large areas of native sand, in a contrasting tan color, stretch for acres off some tees and along some fairways. The greens have dramatic rolls and dips in them. There are colorful accents throughout: flower beds, coquina rock retaining walls and several thousand azalea bushes.
Target golf best describes the strategy on this 7045 yard, 147 slope championship golf Jim Fazio designed course. El Diablo is worth a special effort to play.
